Skorts!

On Friday night Alphaville's disco ball splashed a thousand lights on Shred Flinstone, Zookraught, and Skorts. The afternoon high of the Hottober day had topped out in the low 70’s and these bands continued to bring out-of-season levels of heat to the stage after sundown. Like three corners of a perfect triangle this bill was perfectly balanced with a glowing intensity from start to finish. Here’s our account:

Shred Flinstone was the exploding can of soda you stupidly put in the freezer and then forgot about. Blistering power-garage and manic solos had us jumping. Their flavor of distortion had a bounciness that turned the floor into a trampoline. At some point their frontman/lead guitarist leapt off stage to start a pogo pit. Bass hopscotched up and down the fretboard as the rhythm section pounded away with locked in riffs. It ended with a high speed crash, as it should have.

Zookraught is in the middle of their Vida Violet tour. They came all the way from Seattle to remind us that the Emerald City still rocks. Alphaville may be turning into a pilgrimage site for Seattle bands, just recently as August we also saw fellow Sea-Town heroes Beautiful Freaks grace the same stage on their nationwide tour. Zookraught packed a punch mightier than a power trio would suggest. They were all vocalists and flexed this superpower on the first song, drummer shouting along to their manic groove while both guitarists sang harmonies. They could sing, they could scream, in their black bleeding eye makeup they could do everything.

The anticipation for Skorts had us foaming at the mouth. Could also be rabies, but it’s a rare affliction for rodents. Their blend of optimistically dark rock shakes your bones and lifts your spirit at the same time. Their songs are driven by powerful melodies, soaring vocals to compliment heavy downtuned riffs and pounding grooves. They had some new surprises in their setlist, including a crowd-requested number in drop C. It was well past midnight as the audience headbanged and head bobbed, making their latest single Steal The Night all the more appropriate for the moment.

And that was just the late show. We missed the entire 8:00 early show and left as the late night DJ was warming up the decks. Alphaville was a buzzing beehive of familiar faces and great music.
