“Come with me if you want to live rock”
June 25th, 2024
Last night was all right at Brooklyn’s Baby’s All Right. S.C.A.B., Terminator, and Pisha lit up the light bulb stage for a late night set of music. It was one of the most instrumentally diverse shows we’ve been to while out on the beat, and one of the latest, too. Which is incredibly satisfying in July, to loiter outside afterwards at 1:00 in the morning on a warm summer night. Here’s our account of events.
S.C.A.B. opened the night in motion, leaping out the gates with a surfing song with occasional three part harmonies. Their two guitarists were whammy bar wizards, wielding a Fender Jaguar and Jazzmaster. This resulted in an often warbling, slightly underwater sound. They downpicked like they wanted to break a string. Bass walked an expertly fine line between nimble and heavy and the drummer kept the set lively and driving.
The four women of Terminator brought with them two guitars, two basses, drums, synth, saxophone, flute, and a giant metal sheet stood up like a wall mirror. With these tools they deconstructed Rock and Roll and reconstructed it in their own image, and sometimes didn’t put it back together at all. This was modern day No Wave straight from the CBGB time machine. We’ve been listening to a lot of the IPUC compilation album recently, the big bang of the Riot Grrrl movement, and also felt Terminator manifested that energy as well. “Hasta la vista, Baby’s All Right”.
Pisha finished the night with synth pop dance beats and sailor outfits. Synth, bass, and backing track supported their frontwoman as she spun breathy tales about love and mystery. She thanked the crowd for coming out so late, then smiled and ad libbed “I’m working late, ‘cause I’m a singer”. Our favorite part was when the synth player would add vocal harmonies. Towards the end they played their new song WTF, the music video for which you can watch at the link.
It truly was Rrrat City afterwards. Crawling around at one in the morning we saw more rodents running up and down the streets of Williamsburg than we’ve ever seen anywhere else in the city. Rrrat pack is strong. Connect with these bands below if you weren’t at the show and see them next time!
