Downtown and downstairs at the Bowery Electric, NYC indie label House Of Feelings put on a party. The bill was full of party favors in the shape of Brightviolet, Spookystack, Le Bang, and Skorts. This monthly residency aptly dubbed PWRHOUSE was exactly that, a high voltage powerhouse showcase. Here’s what we recall:

Spookystack opened his set by reiterating the fact that WE ARE NOT THE SAME. These lyrics hit hard with punchy beats that ricocheted off the stone walls of the Bowery cellar. We were thinking “how does someone come up with these nu-wave earworms?”. The answer was right in front of us because Spookystack was wearing his influences on his chest. He rocked a The Jesus And Mary Chain shirt, emblazoned with a giant star, probably in reference to their 1989 album Automatic. They would probably love Spookystack.

Spookystack

It’s been more than a season since we’ve last seen Le Bang and their rocking minimalist mayhem. Their performances are like fiery comets, if you blink you just might miss it. They plowed through Bang Anthem, Ice Cream Man, Audio Robot Disco, Metrocool, Superstitious, Bunny Boy, Wannabe, and Eurotrash Girl at breakneck speed. And the crowd couldn’t get enough. During one of the few pauses to catch a breath someone shouted “PLAY ANOTHER LE BANGER!”

Le Bang

Skorts could have started a riot in the Bowery Electric basement. We were without earplugs and thus experienced their hairraising harmonies and thunderous rhythms in full technicolor. They opened with Cyclops Girlfriend, a maximalist dance rocker whose chorus asks a crucial question: “Don’t tell me why, why dance alone tonight?”. Mixed in with their familiar hits were some unfamiliar heaters. Rumor is that the debut Skorts record is imminent which has our whiskers trembling in anticipation.

House Of Feelings went all-out for this event. Bands gave an enthusiastic shout out to Charlie for running sound and we were told Auel produced the stage visuals. Our apologies to Brightviolet for missing their DJ set, thank you for priming the dance floor. If you missed this night we’ve got good news, PWRHOUSE at Bowery Electric will be back. Rrrat Pack, out.
